The beginning of a research project doesn’t always feel like a beginning. Sometimes, it’s full of quiet logistics, invisible labour, and moments of uncertainty. That’s what we explored together at the South Coast Doctoral Training Partnership’s Policy & Population cluster day.
Held at the University of Portsmouth, the event brought together PhD researchers to reflect on ethics, timelines, practical barriers, and the emotional terrain that shapes the “before” of fieldwork. I shared thoughts on planning fatigue, navigating accessibility concerns, and the value of soft preparation — especially in research with disabled communities.
Our discussions ranged from bureaucratic hurdles to the relational work of building trust. The day ended at Portsmouth Historic Dockyards — a striking contrast between rooted maritime stories and the unfolding narratives of our own work.
Spaces like these remind us that research is more than data collection. It’s made in the conversations, hesitations, and shared insights that come before anything is written down. And that pre-beginning matters deeply.
